About

At Bexley Seabury Seminary, we hold our legacy and history while envisioning a vibrant and inclusive future.

Our Mission

The Seminary beyond walls, Bexley Seabury educates, forms, and inspires the body of Christ to blaze new pathways or prophetic and pastoral service in response to God’s call.

Our Core Values

Our values shape every aspect of our work, guiding us as we educate and form leaders for the church and the world. We are…

Diverse
We commit to increasing the diversity in our community to reflect the diversity of God’s beloved community.

Collaborative
We build partnerships to cultivate and strengthen communities in and beyond the church.

Context-Aware
We practice active and intentional engagement across cultures, gifts, and needs of all communities and train students to do the same.

Relational
We foster deep and authentic relationships that connect members of our community across geographic and temporal boundaries.

Accessible
We minimize barriers to theological education and ministerial formation for all God’s people.

Mission-Oriented
We equip all of God’s people with theologically and ethically grounded leadership for the advancement of God’s mission in the world.

Future-Focused
We move boldly, with faith and hope, into the unfolding future of the church and the world.

The Expansive History of BexSea

Bexley Seabury Seminary was formed in 2012 through the federation of Bexley Hall Seminary in Columbus, Ohio and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. The history of the two seminaries, now shared, builds on the ministries of their 19th-century founders, while aiming to be a more diverse and inclusive space for students and participants to study, build community, and deepen their faith.

The Seminary District for Theological Education

Bexley Seabury’s physical location is on the second floor of the Chicago Theological Seminary (CTS) at 1407 East 60th Street. BexSea is one of six seminaries located within a one-square-mile area in the historic Hyde Park/Woodlawn district of Chicago. We are proud to be part of this ecumenical center of graduate theological education and ministerial formation.

Our campus is fully ADA-accessible and environmentally responsible. From its vegetated outdoor landscape to its striking green-roof edifice, BexSea has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification status. Co-locating with CTS represents a deepening of the two seminaries’ association, which dates back to 1984. Both Bexley Seabury and CTS share a commitment to ecumenical and interfaith experience as a key component for the formation of lay and ordained leaders to better equip them to lead change in the church and in the world.
