IN MEMORIAM: Charles Cason, Jr., Seabury Western ’63
The Reverend Canon Charles Edward Cason Jr. of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Seabury Western Class of 1963, died peacefully Friday, February 7th, 2025, after a five-month battle with cancer, aged 87. Born November 16th, 1937, in Vidalia, Georgia to Charles E Cason Sr. and Sarah Lou Dugger, he graduated from Statesboro High School in 1955, where he enjoyed working at the radio station as a DJ. After high school graduation, Charles attended and graduated from Georgia Southern University with a major in Mathematics, before graduating from Seabury Western Theological Seminary with a focus on Liturgy and Preaching, where he was class President.
Charles became ordained in the historic Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia. He was assigned to the mission of St. Francis in Camilla, GA where he designed and built the Church. In 1967, Charles moved his family to Menominee, WI, when he was called to be the Rector of Grace Episcopal Church. While living in Menominee, Charles became a firefighter and was twice elected to the City Council and the County Board. He served one term as President on the City Council. After being in Menominee for seven years, Charles went on to be the Rector of Zion Episcopal Church in Oconomowoc, WI for three years. Later, Charles and his family relocated to Oshkosh, WI to embark on a new journey where he was elected Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church. He served 20 years with this church until his retirement. While in Oshkosh, Charles served 15 years on the Police and Fire Commission. five of those years, he was elected President.
Charles enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, daughter, and grandchildren. Every year he enjoyed spending a week at deer camp with his son and friends. Charles shared his passion for photography (even had his own dark room for developing pictures), shooting trap in a league, playing the flute and guitar. Charles was an avid reader who loved to continuously learn about new things. He was also a big advocate for serving his church community.
Charles will be deeply missed by his wife of 61 years, Joan; his children, Charles “Chad” Cason III of Berlin, Wisconsin, Katherine (David) Treichel of Lincoln, Nebraska; his grandchildren; Megan Treichel (Ian Windham) of Cleveland, Ohio, Allen Treichel of Lincoln, Nebraska, Samuel (Hailey) Cason of Markesan, Wisconsin, and Zachary Cason of Berlin, Wisconsin. He is further survived by other family and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by two younger brothers, James Corliss Cason and William Dennis Cason along with his parents.
Services were held at Trinity Episcopal Church (203 Algoma Blvd) on February 14, 2025
